I am a writer, photographer, musician, student, and a black and gold bleeding fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 2004 a routine operation on my right knee changed my life forever. I developed a life-threatening infection and was rushed into the first of many emergency operations. I have undergone a total of 22 operations on my right leg to try and stop the infections that kept returning. Eventually, after realizing that my knee joint was completely blown due to the surgeries and infections, I made the decision to amputate. In Sept 2007 I became a right above-knee-amputee. It's a decision I will never regret. People see me as brave and strong and inspirational but I don't see myself that way at all. I see my decision to amputate as merely a means to save my life because I've always been acutely aware that infection can kill.

My past is riddled with mistakes, some big, some small, but I do not have regrets. I believe that the events and the people of the past are what mold us into the people we are today. I have looked death in the eye and know with certainty that life is worth living and worth fighting for. The medical world fascinates me probably because I've spent so much of my life surrounded by it. I am awed by the human body and its capacities and what technology allows for in regards to it.

I am proud of who I am. I am proud of where I’ve been and how far I’ve come. I think I see the world differently than most people. I am always thinking and always wondering. I have a creative spirit and am often easily distracted. I never give up and I never give in because in all honesty, I don't know how to.
