New to the site, here is my story
Posted On 02/28/2011 22:35:25 by texasff
Hello all, I found this site, and thought it would be a great place to hang out. My story begins on June 1, 2009, which began like any other day, woke up and went to work. I work for an auto parts store, delivering parts to other stores. I was on my third run, parked in the parking lot at approximately 1530 hours. I was standing behind my work truck, and had just finished loading some parts in the bed, when a guy driving a mustang in excess of 70 miles an hour flew into the back of my work truck. The impact was strong enough to flip my work truck about eight feet in the air, send me flying about eight feet in the air and landing about 10 feet from where I was standing. One of my legs was almost completely severed at the scene, my neck was severely injured, as well as my right hip. To be completely honest, I remember none of this. I have learned of the events from talking to family, friends and co-workers. I have been told by countless people, that despite the severe trauma, I was conscious and coherent the entire time. I was able to give my cell phone to a by stander and have them notify my parents, and was also able to notify the first firefighters on scene that I too am a firefighter. I underwent many surgeries, and was sedated for about 2 weeks. I woke up in the hospital, and began the journey of my recovery. Since being released from the hospital and rehab center, I have started the training for prosthetics, though it was was put on hold due to a needed surgery to help pain issues. I am in the process of getting back on the prosthetics, but am currently facing a weight issue, and need to lose some weight. Things have been an uphill battle, but my determination has kept me going.

What can I say, I have always had a unique outlook on life. My training with the fire service, both before and after the accident, has helped me get this far. We train for many things, some of which is to prepare us for what we will see while on scenes. I used this aspect of the training to prepare myself for this life long journey, to be able to look at what is before me and make a joke about it and tackle it head on. I have a unique story, I enjoy sharing it with anyone willing to listen. I would love to share it on a larger level, but I need to work on my public speaking skills (or lack thereof).

Keep on keeping on. A positive attitude goes a long way. Good Luck.
